Poor Alan Pardew and Newcastle could not cope. They were two down after 22 minutes and it could have been more.
By half-time they were a man down, too, as Steven Taylor completed a dismal 45 minutes of personal difficulty by cuffing Sergio Aguero to the floor.
The man they call Merlin — like the magician, get it? — scored the first goal in just the seventh minute, David Silva heading Taylor’s poor clearance into an empty goal from eight yards.
Aguero scored the second, running on to Edin Dzeko’s flick to find the bottom corner with a sweep of his right foot.
Later in the half, Dzeko headed wide when he should have scored while Aguero’s shot struck Taylor’s arm and perhaps should have resulted in a penalty.
New manager Manuel Pellegrini could not have wished for much more from his opening match.
